Bijapur. A major tragedy was averted after security forces unearthed a landmine planted under the road in Naxal-affected Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh on Wednesday. Explosive material (IED) weighing 25-25 kg was planted in a Barrudi tunnel.
According to police the security forces detected two landmines on the Awapalli-Basaguda road on Wednesday. Today a team of Central Reserve Police Force was sent on patrol in Awapalli police station area. The team was near the Durga temple on Awapalli-Basaguda road.
Then they came to know that there is a powerful landmine under the road.
Police officials said that the Maoists had placed two explosives of 25 kg each in a plastic bag in the middle of the road by making an eight-feet long-wide and five-feet deep tunnel (fox hole) from the side of the road. The CRPF and bomb disposal squad defused the explosive material. Police officials further informed that the Maoists had planted a landmine to harm the security forces, but due to the alertness of okthe security forces, a major accident was averted.
It may be mentioned that the Maoists had planted a similar (fox hole) landmine in Aranpur in Dantewada district of Chhattisgarh in April, killing 10 policemen and the driver of the vehicle.
