New Delhi : The process of exchanging Rs 2,000 notes has started. Crowd could be seen in some parts of the country to change the notes, while in many places the notes are being changed peacefully in the bank. On the other hand, people are also reaching the post office to exchange notes in large numbers.
But there will be no system to exchange Rs 2,000 notes in the country’s post offices. People who have accounts in post offices will not get the facility to exchange notes. However, people will definitely be able to deposit Rs 2,000 notes in these accounts. An official said that no arrangements have been made to exchange notes in post offices. For this, customers can only go to the Reserve Bank’s offices or bank branches. Two thousand rupee notes are still legal tender. In this case, there is no restriction in depositing it, provided KYC of the depositor’s account has been done.
It may be mentioned that this was not the case after the announcement of demonetisation in 2016. In a notification issued by the Reserve Bank, banks have been advised to make arrangements for sheds and water for customers waiting in their branches. Banks have been asked to make note exchange facility available over the counter in the normal way. Apart from this, banks have been asked to keep details of Rs 2,000 notes deposited and exchanged daily.
