Raipur: In a significant turn of events, the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) has granted considerable relief to former IPS officer G.P. Singh, who was compulsorily retired by the central government. CAT has issued an order for the dismissal of all cases pertaining to G.P. Singh within a span of four weeks.
Singh, an IPS officer from the 1994 batch, faced compulsory retirement by the Ministry of Home Affairs last July, following the recommendation of the state government. This decision arose amidst a flurry of controversy surrounding allegations of corruption and sedition.
The controversy unfolded when the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) conducted raids on July 1, 2021, not only at Singh’s official residence in the police lines but also at 15 other locations in Raigad and Odisha. These raids yielded the recovery of several sensitive documents and unaccounted property worth 10 crores. Consequently, the CBI lodged an FIR against G.P. Singh in a corruption case, prompting his suspension by the government on July 5, followed by the initiation of a sedition case on July 8.
Responding to these developments, G.P. Singh filed a petition in the High Court on July 9, 2021, seeking a CBI investigation into the matter. After months of investigation, G.P. Singh was apprehended from Noida on January 11, 2022. However, he was subsequently granted bail in May 2022.
Following a comprehensive review of the case by the Service Review Committee, the Ministry of Home Affairs opted for G.P. Singh’s compulsory retirement on July 21, 2023. At the time of his retirement, Singh had eight years of service remaining.
CAT’s recent directive to dismiss all cases against G.P. Singh within four weeks represents a significant development in the legal proceedings concerning the retired IPS officer. The implications of this decision on his future and the ongoing legal battles remain to be seen.
